Outdoor Archery Season, 2005
Not so much a late start to this year, as an unprepared start. I had a huge
amount of work that delayed the start of any serious practice until the end
of April.

Competitions
- WCW Fita Qualifier, 30th April
- The first tournament of the year was my normal practice venue. We now
have a couple of NAA Judges, and so can hold Fita Qualifiers. My score
for this tournament was really poor (my worst for 7 years), but my shot
felt OK. I had attributed this to lack of practice, but later found
that my bottom limb bolt had slipped and the tiller was reversed on my
bow.
- Canada Cup, 13th-15th May
- Third. After fixing the limb tiller, my Fita results were
pretty comfortable, about 100 points higher than the first tournament of
the year. The Fita scores were let down by dismal shooting in the
head-to-heads. I got lucky in a couple of rounds, and scraped through
into the awards.
- UK Masters, 4th-5th June
- I made the big mistake of going for a 10km run the day before this
tournament, not having run for many years. I suffered for it throughout
the tournament, and didn't sleep particularly well at night. The
ranking round and head to head results were disappointing, and the Fita
was spoilt by a dreadful 30m score.
- Burnaby Fita Star, 11th June
- For a lot of this year, my shot has been somewhat fragile; I am having
periods where I am shooting exceptionally well, and nothing can go
wrong, and periods when I am struggling to shoot anything right. This
tournament had periods of both. I shot an average score the first day,
but gave up on the second day because I couldn't get my shot right at
all. Lack of practice is becoming very obvious.
- WCW Fita Star, 10th July
- The first Fita Star at Kenmore Ranges for years had quite a reasonable
attendance. My score was fairly indifferent, but I didn't mind, because
I was just pleased to be able to shoot a Fita Star that took me less
than half an hour to travel to. On the second day, the club held a
metric 900 round (60m, 50m, 40m). I didn't shoot particularly well for
that, but it was practice for the Sherwood shoot next weekend.
- Sherwood International, 16th-17th July
- First. Finally, I won the Sherwood shoot! As usual, this
tournament was great fun. The first day's weather was overcast and
calm, pretty good shooting conditions overall. The second day was hot
any sunny, with the wind picking up at the second distance. I had a
comfortable lead after the first day, but struggled with commitment to
the shot on the second day, and was slowly being caught by Jeff
Anderson all day. I managed to hold on long enough to win. I had the
added distraction the first day of knowing something was wrong with at
my house (my network gateway wasn't responding the night before), and
being worried about the cause. (It turned out to be a glitch in my DSL
modem.)
- Burnaby Fita Star, 13th August
- I don't remember much about this one. The score was pretty desperate,
though.
